14 Dec (Sat): Free evening tour for families at Pasir Ris mangroves

It's the school holidays, and we usually try to squeeze in a nature outing to Pasir Ris Mangroves for the families. Great news! We are organising a public walk on 14 December!

Pasir Ris Mangroves is an awesome place for mangrove wildlife, and it's easy to forget just how close the mangroves are to the HDB estate and MRT station! It is a cool place to look at giant mudskippers, crabs, birds, squirrels, jellyfishes, monitor lizards, even snakes! Come join us for this outing, but you have to register first! Click here for the online registration form. Oh, have I told you the walk is FREE? Yes, free. It's our way to reach out to everyone and show them the awesome wildlife we have in our own backyard.

Date: 14 December, 2013 (Saturday)

Time: 5 pm (We should end around 6.30pm, just before sunset.)

Meeting point: Pasir Ris Park, Carpark C. Meet near the first toilets nearest the entrance to the carpark. The meeting point is a short stroll from the Pasir Ris MRT station. Pasir Ris is a very long park with many carparks (from A to D). Do look at the map to be sure you are heading for the correct carpark, Carpark C.

Lots of bird-watching to do at Pasir Ris. These are grey herons. Bring your binoculars to enjoy a spot of bird-watching.

Our visitors taking photos of a Little Heron perched on a branch. Bring your cameras!

There are lots of Giant Mudskippers. The kids would enjoy spotting them. Not that difficult to spot them actually. Here's a mudskipper forming tracks as it moves out of its watery burrow.

Another 'die-die-can-see' creature in the mangroves: tree-climbing crabs. These crabs have burrows.

One of the larger animals in the mangroves is the monitor lizard. Don't be afraid of them. They are rather harmless, and we have some funny stories to tell you about the monitor lizards. You can also read about our encounter with the lizards during our walk in September. There's a link to an interesting video in the blog post.

There's so much to see in Pasir Ris Mangroves. Come join us and see for yourselves.

We end our walk with a drawing session for the kids, and sometimes the grown-ups join in too. Nice!

To end, here are some frequently-asked questions for your reading.

FAQs

Q: Suitable attire?
A: Comfortable outdoors clothes and normal walking shoes. There may be mosquitoes in the mangroves, so you might want to wear long pants and a long-sleeved shirt or bring repellent.

Q: What should I bring?
A: Rain gear and camera. If you want to continue exploring the mangroves on your own after our walk, you might want to bring a small torch.

Q: Age restriction?
A: None. As long as the participants are able to walk well and be responsible for their own well-being during the walk.

Q: Is the boardwalk accessible to prams?
A: Yes, it is a smooth ride throughout, on boardwalks or hard paths.

Q: What if I am late?A: Just catch up with us on the boardwalk! We will start from the entrance closest to Carpark C (with red star on the image below) and take the first right turn towards the Mangrove Jetty on Sungei Tampines. We will end the walk either at the jetty or near the pond, depending on group size.

Q: What if it rains?

A: This is a rain-or-shine event. The guides will be at the meeting point regardless of the weather. Usually we are able to resume the walk once the rain stops. Please come prepared with rainwear. You make your own decision whether to come or not in the event of bad weather.

Here's a post about a walk that was delayed by heavy rain at Pasir Ris: "What can we see at Pasir Ris in the rain?"
