Sharing Pasir Ris Mangroves with families in our December walk

Looking for an activity to break the monotony of work or school life? Simply join us for our walks as over 70 participants did on our last walk of the year at Pasir Ris Mangroves! The beauty of nature is that it is dynamic and even after visiting the same place many times, you will always have a different experience.

Fun starts at registration!

Look out for our placard before the walk so you know you've found us!
Sharing with kids on some types of insects using fake insects.

Kids are wonderful at spotting creatures!

Our drawing session for kids and adults alike!

Even though it was the weekend after the Christmas,
the spirit of giving was still alive as a participant gave us cookies!

A special mention to the cheerful student councillors
from Dunman High School. Thanks to their teacher, Kok Sheng!
Look out for updates on our next walk coming up soon!

Things that fly and slither at Pasir Ris Mangroves!

The Crabs went out to Pasir Ris Mangroves with a large group of families on a Saturday evening in October. There were nearly 40 visitors. What a splendid walk we had! Pasir Ris Mangroves is really easy to get to as it is just a short walk from Pasir Ris MRT station, and for people who drive there, the carpark has lots of parking for everyone. And while you're there in Pasir Ris Mangroves, do look out for these amazing wildlife!

The beautiful Atlas Moth! We almost missed this moth as it was hanging above us. The Atlas Moth (Attacus atlas) is one of the largest moths in the world. It is so named because the markings on its wings do resemble maps! Interestingly enough, the common name for this species of moth in Hong Kong (Cantonese) is translated to "snake head moth", probably because the wing tips do look like a snake's head!

Everyone got excited when they spotted the Dog-faced water snake (Cerberus schneiderii) in the water. We usually see this species of snake in the evening when it comes out to hunt for fish and invertebrates. It can be easy to miss this animal because its colour and markings provide excellent camouflage! It wasn't easy to spot the snake initially, but after a while, everyone finally saw it.

October and December - Pasir Ris Mangroves nature walks

** UPDATE 25 NOV 2014 - We have closed registration for the Pasir Ris Mangrove walk in December. We are FULL! For those who missed this chance, look out for our announcement of nature walks in 2015. The post will be published soon. In the meantime, enjoy nature and the great outdoors! **

Hello friends!

We are changing our monthly guided walks for the months of October and December to Pasir Ris Mangroves instead. The Chek Jawa Boardwalk (mangrove segment) is closed for upgrading works until the end of January 2015, hence this change in our schedule and venue.

For the sake of clarity, I shall repeat myself (pardon me!): The Chek Jawa Boardwalk guided walks for October, November and December are cancelled, and replaced by Pasir Ris Mangroves guided walks in October and December.

Our guided walks are specially designed for kids and families. Adults are welcome too, of course! Come and explore with us. Our volunteer guides (the Naked Hermit Crabs) will be there to show you the biodiversity richness of the Pasir Ris mangroves. Sign up on our online registration form, and you will hear from us within a few days.

Dates: 25th October 2014 and 27th December 2014 (Saturdays)
Time: 5 pm
Duration: roughly 1 to 1.5 hour
Meeting point: Pasir Ris Park, Car Park C

And have I mentioned the guided walks are free? Yes, they are!

Meet outside the first toilets nearest to the entrance of the carpark. The meeting point is a short stroll from the Pasir Ris MRT station. Pasir Ris is a very long park with many carparks (from A to D). Do look at the map to be sure you are heading for the correct carpark.

Our last morning Chek Jawa Boardwalk for 2014!

It was a huge turnout for the walk on 27 September with about 60 eager participants that were excited to discover Chek Jawa's rich biodiversity!

Look at all those radiant smiles!

We saw many mangrove crabs such as the tree climbing crabs which has a diet that mainly consists of leaves and can climb trees up to 6m high!

A beautiful collage done by one of our participants, Seow Ling Tan

Unfortunately, the mangrove boardwalks are closed from 29 September 2014 to 31st January 2015 and we will not be able to have walks at Chek Jawa.

Do not worry though! We will be having our walks at Pasir Ris Mangroves instead! Do check out our blog for updates on the walks at Pasir Ris Mangroves.

Outing to Chek Jawa Boardwalk - of spiders, snakes and rambutans

Fifty people turned up for the Chek Jawa Boardwalk outing with the Crabs yesterday. How lucky we were because the weather turned out to be cool and windy for most part of the morning! Many of them shared with us that this is the first visit to Ubin, and that they wanted to spend the Hari Raya weekend away from the shopping belt. What do we say to that? "Excellent choice"!

This is the view that greeted the visitors on arriving at Pulau Ubin jetty. National Day is just around the corner, and the flags and buntings are up. The rustic life in Pulau Ubin is very much a treasured identity of Singapore. It reminds us of what Singapore used to be during the early years of nationhood, something very familiar to our pioneer generation. Many of us are glad that the way of life in Ubin has been preserved even in this super modern day and age. Here is a recorded interview by AsiaOne with one of the remaining 30-odd residents of Pulau Ubin: "We don't close doors, there are no thieves here".

How did our outing turn out? Read on ....

It's Fruiting Season! Durians and Breadfruits at Chek Jawa

Last Saturday morning we had another fun-filled walk with 56 visitors turning up at Chek Jawa! Greeting us as we walked towards the waiting area are calls of a white-rumped shama (not to mention swarms of feasting mosquitoes as we stopped to take photographs)! They are very popular songbirds in Singapore and can mimic other birds, hence they are often the target of poachers. This individual is likely a resident on Pulau Ubin.

Evening stroll through Pasir Ris Mangroves

Pasir Ris Mangroves is such an easy nature destination to do. It is just a short walk from Pasir Ris MRT station, and if you drive, there's plenty of free parking nearby. We had about 20 visitors (comprising young families, couples, friends) last Saturday evening, and we managed to see a good variety of animals resident in the mangroves.

One of the first sightings is this super cute baby monitor lizard looking out of its hole. It seemed unperturbed by our presence, so we were able to shoot lots of photos of it. In fact, on our way back an hour later, this cute fella was still there. See the lower photo.

March is month of Durian Flowers and Little Piggies

The Crabs are back in action after a 2-month break! And we have lots of interesting stuff to report from our short outing to Chek Jawa with 50 visitors and 7 guides.

Some of the guides are huge durian fans, so we always look out for durian flowers when we visit Chek Jawa in March. Impeccable timing because we did find a carpet of durian flowers on the gravel path near the information kiosk! Guys, this means we are on target to have a bountiful durian harvest in July. On one very important condition though .... that the humble, often-maligned fruit bats are still there to perform their very important role of fruit-pollinator in Chek Jawa. We always remind our visitors: No bats, no durians!

We also found out an interesting fact over the weekend. The durian flower can be used as an ingredient in some South-east Asian recipes: durian blossom curry, with belacan, in a soup, or fried in an omelette, according to Grace, one of our nature-loving friends. Here's a collection of recipes from the Internet that use durian flowers as an ingredient. We learnt something new again!

Despite this, there are many animals to be seen from the broadwalk, like mudskippers, tree-climbing crabs, shorebirds and many fish. If you are lucky, otters and monitor lizards may even grace us with their presence! We promise that you will have an awesome time exploring the mangroves with the Naked Hermit Crabs!

*****

Hi Friends, we are back with our monthly Chek Jawa Boardwalk trips! This year, we've picked to do our walks on the 4th Saturday morning of each month. This date avoids all major low tide dates and also long weekends when Ubin can get crowded. It works well for the volunteer guides too as these dates 'conflict' least with the low tide shore trips that many of the Crabs are doing with various organisations.

Proposed dates for 2014:
22 Mar (Sat) - school holidays
26 Apr (Sat)
24 May (Sat)
28 Jun (Sat) - school holidays
26 Jul (Sat)
27 Sep (Sat)
25 Oct (Sat)
22 Nov (Sat) - school holidays
27 Dec (Sat) - school holidays

Meeting time: 9:30 am
Meeting place: Chek Jawa Information Kiosk, Pulau Ubin
Duration of walk: around 2 hours
Fees: none. You just have to pay for transport to get to Chek Jawa.

Why are we doing these free nature walks?

Simply because we want to share our love for the mangroves and inter-tidal ecosystems with you. These walks have proven to be an eye-opener to many people who do not realise there is much richness in plant and animal life in the coastal regions of Singapore. This is a public outreach programme run entirely by volunteers, and our heartfelt desire is to see more people understand the importance of nature conservation of our natural shorelines.

An interesting bit of information: we have done over six years of free boardwalk trips to Chek Jawa! Our first guided walk was in September 2007. How many visitors attend our Chek Jawa walks in a year? Roughly 500. Do help us spread the word!

How do you sign up for our walks?

It's easy. You sign up at our Online Registration Form, and we give you a reply to confirm the places that you need.

Typically, we open registration one month before the walk, and replies are processed during the weekend. Do be patient with us as we all hold day jobs, and we will get round to doing replies.

If you have questions, please write to us at nakedhermitcrabs@gmail.com

Who can sign up for the walks?

We welcome small groups of friends and family.

Our walks are not designed for large groups from schools, corporates or other organisations. If you are organising a day trip for a large group of people, it is best if you contact the professional nature guides or event organisers. Here is a list of professional guides in the wildsingapore.com website.

There is no age restriction as long as you are able to look after yourself, and be able to walk 2 km, walk up the stairs of a 6-storey high bird-watching tower, tolerate whatever the weather throws at you (rain or shine), and in general, enjoy being outdoor in a great natural setting.
