Why are we doing these free nature walks?

The Naked Hermit Crabs are nature lovers passionate about conservation of Singapore's natural inter-tidal shores and mangroves. We want to share this passion with you. The natural shorelines are teeming with plant and animal life, although some of them are living in rather fragile ecosystems. Sadly, Singapore has lost much of its natural coastal regions over the decades through development.

On this SG50 Jubilee Year, it remains our hope that we are able to save the last remaining natural shores and mangroves for future generations of Singaporeans to enjoy. Let's dream and make it happen! That in the SG100 Centennial Year of 2065, the natural shores of Chek Jawa Wetlands and its wondrous wildlife are still there for all to enjoy!

Always remember: Conservation of wildlife begins with the conservation of their natural habitats.

Our Nature Walks

These walks are part of a public outreach programme run entirely by volunteers. We are now into our eighth year of running the monthly Chek Jawa Boardwalk nature tours. Our first guided walk was in September 2007. It does feel like a short while ago when we got started! If we got our sums right, we have guided more than 3500 people since 2007. Thanks go out to all our wonderful and adorable volunteers (new and old); we are still going strong.

How do you sign up for our walks?

Right here, at our Online Registration Form. We will send you an email to confirm the number of places allotted to your group. Depending on the number of guides available for a date, we typically accept 50 to 80 visitors in one trip.

If you wish to reach us by email, please write to us at nakedhermitcrabs@gmail.com. Registration are accepted only through our Online Registration Form.

Who can sign up for the walks?

We welcome small groups of friends and family.

Our walks are not designed for large groups from schools, corporates or other organisations. If you are organising an outing for a large group of people, it is best if you contact the professional nature guides or event organisers. Here is a list of professional guides in the wildsingapore.com website.

There is no age restriction as long as you are able to look after yourself, and be able to walk 2 km, walk up the stairs of a 6-storey high bird-watching tower, tolerate whatever the weather throws at you (rain or shine), and in general, enjoy being outdoor in a great natural setting.

More Information:

Click on these links to know more about Chek Jawa, Pulau Ubin, how to get there, and what to see and do.

How to get the Chek Jawa:

1. At Changi Jetty, now called Changi Point Ferry Terminal, (Lorong Bekukong, Changi Village), catch the bumboat to Pulau Ubin.

2. At the Ubin Jetty, you will see many drivers and their taxis (vans) waiting for passengers. Tell the taxi driver to take you to Chek Jawa.

3. You will alight at Punai Hut. Chek Jawa is just a short walk from Punai Hut. Make sure you get the telephone number of the driver so that you can call him/her for the return trip.

4. We will be waiting for you at the Chek Jawa Information Kiosk.

FAQ

Q: Suitable attire?
A: Comfortable outdoor clothes and walking shoes

Q: What should I bring?
A: Drinking water (important), rain gear, hat/baseball cap. Optional: change of attire, camera, binoculars.

Q: Age restriction?
A: None as long as the participants are prepared to walk 2 km, climb a 6-storey high tower, able to tolerate the hot sun or wet weather, and be responsible for their own well-being during the walk.

Q: How do I recognise the organisers?
A: We will be the ones doing a roll-call at Chek Jawa Information Kiosk. As long as you make it to Chek Jawa, you will definitely see us.

Q: What if it rains?
A: This is a rain-or-shine event. The Crabs will be there at Chek Jawa regardless of the weather. Usually we are able to resume the walk once the rain stops. Please come prepared with rainwear. In the event of bad weather, you make your own decision whether to come or not.
